In fact, approximately 200,000 accidents each year send children to the emergency room for treatment of an injury which occurred on the school playground. The following tips are designed to increase the quality of the playground supervision in your school, insuring that children are safe on your playground.

  • Keeping Kids Cool at School

As most of the nation heads back to school facing triple-digit heat, schools face the challenges associated with outdoor recess and overheated classrooms. Principals and physical educators will face daily decisions regarding children’s heat health on the playground. In this article, we will review some information regarding different playground challenges and solutions to those problems. Of particular concern to schools is that “kids absorb more heat than adults while sweating less. The result is kids have a greater propensity for heat cramps, exhaustion or heat stroke”, according to Dr. Melinda Bossenmeyer, also known as the Recess Doctor. Too Hot to Play? So how hot is too hot for physical activity? The determination depends on a number of factors including...... more.
  • Improving your Playground

I watched a less popular girl, Allison, walk up to a group of four girls who were playing a game of four-square. As she approached and asked, “Can I play?” she was quickly rebuffed. “The game is closed,” Janey, the ring leader, announced. Given the school is a Peaceful Playgrounds’ school, I was surprised at the response because of the “You can’t say, ‘You can’t play’” mantra. Allison, whose disappointment was obvious, turned to play another game. Fortunately, the playground was filled with alternate game choices and two other four-square courts. Allison selected one of those courts and soon was happily involved in another four-square game. This time she didn’t ask, but rather waited in line by the letter D. Permission: is it a good idea?

  • Most schools strictly enforce classroom rules and procedures in order to maintain a safe classroom environment for students. When students go to the playground for recess the classroom rules are not adequate for some playground behaviors. For this reason, playground supervisors or paraprofessionals sometimes find themselves without a protocol for handing discipline issues unique to the playground. This professional article by Dr. Melinda Bossenmeyer covers how teachers and playground supervisors should respond to inappropriate behavior on the playground and steps to take when the behavior continues.

This article also covers the how children become more active, utilizing the outdoor environment for physical activity, and the link between physical activity and academics.
  • Did you implement and maintain adequate supervision?
In this article, I will share with you some words of wisdom I have learned serving as an expert witness in court cases. One key in all of the cases has been whether Administration implemented and maintained active playground supervision. Negligent supervision is a contributing factor in 40% of all injury cases, so training school staff plays a huge role in reducing injuries and potential avoidance of District liability. This article will also cover litigation and suggestions for how to avoid it.

  • Basic vs Super Charged Brain Breaks

A basic "brain break" is a 2 or 3 minute break away from the topic currently being taught combined with a movement activity. The best kind of a brain break is a Supercharged Brain Break which entails a movement activity linked to an academic concept. Supercharged Brain Breaks have a double punch by reinforcing an academic concept and introducing a new movement concept or exercise. Physical Activity and Health Benefits Brain Breaks have another important benefit. They can contribute to the recommended daily amount of 60 minutes of physical activity as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the National Association of Sports and Physical Education. “Brain Breaks work by getting children moving physically which increases the blood flow by bringing more oxygen to the brain and leads to better concentration. Well developed Brain Breaks can help students stretch, develop flexibility, improve coordination and gain focus for the next lesson,” according to the Action for Healthy Kids Organization.
