Playground Rules Should be Simple

Playground Rules Should be simple and easy for children to understand. Rules like “Be Kind” are important because they cover many behaviors that we would want to discourage on the playground. It is also simple and easy for children to remember and understand.

Below is a set of playground rules to consider:

• Listen to playground supervisors
• No bullying! If you see bullying tell an adult.
• Be respectful and kind.
• Keep hands and feet to yourself.
• Return equipment after recess.
• Run-on the grass, not on the blacktop.
• Line up after the freeze bell.

There are many other rules to consider. Special rules may be needed if you have a unique situation due to facilities. If the recess is next to classrooms then you may need a rule that the area by those rooms is off-limits. Another example of a rule for a specific school might be to walk up the ramp if you have a small designed walkway. You might make the rule to walk single file on the walkway.

A staff meeting to discuss playground problems may be helpful in establishing a rule which could eliminate the problem. Another rule might be only students who are given a pass may go to the nurse’s office.
