How many children are deprived of recess every day? Although we don’t know exactly, statistics reveal a trou- bling trend. A 2005 National Center for Education Statistics (NCES 2006) survey found that 7 percent of first-graders and 8 percent of third-graders never had recess and 14% of first-graders and 8 % of third graders had only 1-15 minutes per day.

For people of all ages and in all fields, breaks are considered essential for satisfaction and alertness.
