Section 2 looks at playground markings (hopscotch courts, basketball courts, etc) that contributed to increasing physical activity levels on playgrounds.

Section 4 explores the various strategies for increasing children’s physical activity levels on playgrounds.

Course Description

This is an online on-demand course. Once you enroll in the course and pay for the course, you will be directed to the log on and spot to begin the course. Students can progress through the readings and final quiz at their own pace during the 2 week enrollment period. This course looks at the value of playgrounds and how they can contribute to the recommended 60 minutes daily of physical activity for children. We explore the concept that playgrounds needn’t have to be expensive to get kids active. In fact, upper elementary students rarely play on play structures at all. This session will cover alternatives to the typical playground structure and the research behind the effectiveness of alternative playgrounds strategies like portable equipment, loose equipment, painted playground markings, and natural playgrounds.

Goals

1. Participants will understand that playgrounds need not be expensive to get children physically active.
2. Participants will understand how playgrounds can contribute to children’s overall physical activity at school.
3. Understand how reaching 60 minutes daily of physical activity can contribute to overall health and academics.
4. Explore different types of playground options.
