“Peaceful Playgrounds will provide our students with wonderful age appropriate activities during their physical education time.”

“It’s fun for parents, teachers as well as the students and we look forward to the Peace Playground kick-off involving the community this Friday,” said Yulee Primary School Principal Mary Ann Bennett.

Students will have a fun new area to enjoy thanks to the hard work and dedication of Jennifer Nicholson and Heather Huffman of the Nassau County Health Department, Bennett, and physical education instructor Charlotte Bruckman.

Funded by a grant from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation through the Nassau County Health Department to reduce childhood obesity, the Peaceful Playgrounds Program focuses on following a consistent set of rules, conflict resolution and positive socialization.

Peaceful Playground has been constructed at Yulee Primary School.

“The goal of the new program is to provide a safe and user-friendly playground environment, while promoting physical movement and overall health and fitness,” said Nicholson.

“This program also provides positive options for kids to become more physically active during recess time, allowing the school to meet the 150 minutes per week physical education requirement set by the Florida Legislature in 2007.”

The playground boasts a total of 16 colorfully painted game stations or stencils on a newly resurfaced hardtop/basketball court and pavilion.

Game stations include hopscotch, four square, scattered circles, alphabet grid, number grid, multi-use circle and square and ball hopscotch.
